New technology from GENERAC allows a smaller 10-17kw generator to

power your home safely during a power outage, and amazingly, you

do not even have to be home!

 JUST THINK:

  • No more worries about power outages

  • No more wondering when the power is going to come back on

  • No more pulling out that portable generator-Is it going to start?

  • No more getting the flashlights and candles ready

  • No more spoiled food in the refrigerator or freezer

  • No more tripping over extension cords

As the power grid ages, the weather and climate appears to become more violent,

and power outages are on the increase, it only makes sense to invest into a peace

of mind that this system can provide at a reasonable cost.

This new technology comes in the form of combining the transfer

switch with that of a DLM or Digital Load Management system. ( don't

know what a transfer switch is: Please read below.)

Here's how the NEXUS SMART SWITCH works:

  1. The automatic transfer switch monitors the electric utility.

When there is a disturbance in the power, the switch determines

if there is a bona-fide power outage underway, starts the generator,

and switches the power from the utility lines to the stand-by generator.

  2. On a whole house system, the entire electrical panel is charged.

On a partial house set up, the designated emergency circuits are

charged. Either way there is a mechanical line break from all utility

power so that the two sources of power can never interact.

"3. By monitoring generator engine performance, the Nexus Smart

Switch is able to identify when the generator approaches over-

load. At the appropriate time, the switch disconnects the highest

electrical load(s) in the house, typically an air conditioner(s).

   4. After a 5-minute delay to allow for compressor bleed out, the

switch brings the AC unit(s) back on line one after the other with

a 30-second delay in between. This is the standard capability

in all Nexus Smart Switches and does not require any additional

        components, unlike competitive switches.

   5. In addition, up to four other large 240V loads can be managed

when the Nexus Smart Switch is used in conjunction with

individual DLM modules."  (Generac-How It Works) These

loads need to be run through a contactor bank.

  6. After the utility power is restored, the Nexus Smart Switch determines

if it will stay on, returns the line back to the utility, starts shut down of

the generator, and after a cool down period shuts the generator off.

WHAT DOES ALL OF THIS MEAN TO YOU?

Let's face it, most of us are very dependent upon electrical power. We take

it for granted until it is no longer there or, when we open up the monthly bill.

Imagine yourself sitting in your favorite lazy boy watching the latest episode of NCIS. Dancing With The Stars ended last week, so you finally get to watch your program. Of course your wife is with you because she is more interested in the storm warning notification coming across the bottom of the TV sreen.

Outside the winds are starting to pick up because of the approaching storm.

As the lights flicker, you begin thinking about that new whole house stand-by power system that was installed last week.

The lights and power finally go out!

You are sitting in darkness and silence for about 3-5 seconds. Then outside you hear a faint hum of a motor starting up. So far you have not moved from your lazyboy. In about 30 seconds the lights and TV turn back on and you continue to watch the episode, that is as long as the satellite dish still works. The only thing that disturbs you are the neighbors calling wondering

why you still have power.

You and your family go to bed hearing that faint hum of the generator outsde.

Sometime during the early morning hours the utility power is restored.

The transfer switch detects that, switches the power lines over, runs the generator for a short cooling down period. Then shuts it down. All while you are asleep. Kinda neat Huh!

Generac has made emergency back-up power more affordable, safer and, worry free!

The NEXUS SMART SWITCH whole house transfer does all of the above automatically but with a smaller size generator. These generators are run on LP or natural gas, so there is no running to the gas station or storing flamable liquids.

There are two types of electric

                    generation equipment:

                               -THE PORTABLE GENERATOR:

The portable generator is one that is pulled out whenever it is needed. Whether it is a power outage,at a campsite,or secluded area where there is no electric utility. These generators usually range from 1,000watts to 10,000watts of power and use either a gas or deisel engine to power them.

  - THE BACK-UP GENERATOR

Image description

The back-up power generator is like the cadillac of the auto industry. They are usually professionally installed and when the utlity power fails, fires up and begins suppling the electrical needs of almost the entire home. The fuels used to power these engines range from gas or deisel to natural gas and propane. These generators are permantly fixed and almost worry free.

   - THE TRANSFER SWITCH

Image description

The tranfer switch is nothing more than a safety device that is used whenever the generator is connected directly to a house circuit or circuits. It can be used with either a portable or stationary back-up generator.  It is a switch that separates the utility power from your generator power, so they both can not run at the same time. It protects not only your lines inside your house, but also the lives of the utility workers when they are trying to  get your power back on. Never connect a service circuit to a generator without this device. They can be manual or automatic. Some, as the Nexus Smart Switch from Generac, have the capabilities of running an entire house with a lower kilowatt generator than would otherwise be needed.
